Temperature:- it is very mandatory that the temperature of your space is at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is too cold, the paint is unable to dry up. Moreover, if the temperature is above 70 degrees, the paint can dry too quickly on the top layer which results in bumps and blisters as the bottom layers are still wet.

Ventilation:- Ventilation plays a pivotal role in dries up your paint in several ways. A well-ventilated space helps paint dry faster. If the space is not well-ventilated, and the temperature and humidity are mild outside, consider opening up a window to help with ventilation.

Things that can help:- If you are concerned about ventilation, take into consideration a box fan to help with the drying. A fan box increases the ventilation and decreases the humidity level in the room. Either you can use a fan box else you can switch on the ceiling fan which is another good option to make a cross-ventilation with airflow in the room.

There are different types of surfaces on which we do our projects using spray paints:-

On cardboard:- Cardboard is an impressive surface by choice due to its relatively soft texture, the material of cardboard is more prone to accidental destruction than the layers of paint. Moreover, the paint-drying time for cardboard is also fairly quick. If you do your project in a well-ventilated area, the coats should be dry in almost 15 minutes.

On metal:- When the weather is warm with low humidity, spray paint dries promptly on metal than any other surfaces may be in 10 minutes or less. It is remarkable that the humid temperature will increase the drying time, no matter what you are painting.

On glass:- Painting on glass-like mason jars, windows that can lead to unwelcome drips and streaking, so you will want to apply the coats as light as you can. You can add as many coats as you want with only 15 minutes break between the sessions, it will usually take at least 24 hours before the paint is fully dry.

On plastic:- With plastic, you have to wait for 30 minutes before applying the additional layers. The layers should be fully dry after about 3 hours.

On rubber:- If are working with paint on the rubber surface then it takes 24 hours for spray paint to dry after the session due to its porous surface.

On wood:- Spray paint on the furniture will be much more similar to wood though, in case of furniture you may be painting over an old finish by choice, you will want to sand your furniture piece down smooth and paint it with a primer first and let it dry about 30 minutes, then lightly sand with a sine sanding block with 400 grit sandpaper, you may or may not require a second coat of primer. After drying it will take 10 minutes to get a touchy look.

It is advisable the minimum waiting time of one week, but some acrylic artists wait as much as 6 weeks just to ensure the acrylic paint is completely dried through all the way.

There are various factors that decide the actual length of time it will take for acrylic paint to dry such as:-

How you applied the paint:- It depends on how you applied the paint like thinly, thickly, with or without added mediums or gels.

If the paint was applied in a thick impasto style, it will take a longer time to dry than if you painted in thin washes. Also, adding mediums or gels to the acrylic painting will also affect the drying time(can speed up or slow down).

Temperature and humidity:- Temperature and humidity of both the area where the painting was created and the area where it is drying will be considered in the drying time of the paint. It is best to store and create your painting at a normal room temperature with low humidity.

Ventilation:- The flow of air also affects the paint’s drying time. A normal airflow will help the painting to dry up whereas static air will slow down the process of drying and might even cause a milky film to spread on the paint.

The drying time of acrylic paints also varies from brand to brand. Generally, acrylic paints take 10-20 minutes to dry. But also the drying time depends on different factors like airflow, temperature, and the absorbency of the substrate will affect the drying times of acrylic paint.
